Light and Paint Colours: How Do They Affect Each Other?

The paint colours you choose will have more of an effect on the look of your home than you think.  Have you ever wondered how a specific shade or tone can completely change the atmosphere or feel of a room?  It is not a case of colours simply ‘being different’.  In scientific fact, it’s to do with how they react to light and how they use it.

How Light Works with Paint Colours

The colour of your paint will likely look very different in natural daylight than it will under an artificial bulb.  This is because there is a difference between incandescent, fluorescent and natural light.  Even throughout the day, depending on where individual rooms are facing, the wall colour may change as the sun shifts direction.

For example, bold colours work best in north-facing rooms, where there will be less intense light.  To the south, however, things will work the opposite way.  Lighter, muted colours work well here, as natural light gives them a subtle glow.

It’s essential to take a close look at different paints if you want to achieve a specific look or feel.  Do be aware that, as well as there being a difference between artificial and natural light, you will need to take into account the position of the sun.  A muted colour may look mild in the morning, and bolder in the evening.

How to Pick Your Paint

It’s important you choose paint colours based on as many light conditions as possible.  This is especially the case if you already have a look or feel in mind!

The best way to prepare is to paint a test patch on a chosen wall.  Take note of how the look changes throughout the day.  Do also bear in mind that glossy paint reflects, so you may need to test different types of coat, too.

Try and switch artificial lights on during this time, too.  See what the colours of your walls look like with both natural light (at dusk) and bulb lighting working together.

Do also consider your carpet or flooring, too.  Lighter walls will be greatly affected by strong colours in carpeting, and may even reflect the strongest tones.
